Strengthening Public-Sector Endpoint Security with Score-Based Management

Organization D, a public institution with approximately 1,700 to 2,000 employees, had been applying essential endpoint security practices such as antivirus protection, patch management, and account policy enforcement. However, as attacks increasingly abused legitimate tools and lateral movement techniques, endpoint configuration gaps became a growing concern.

Issues such as disabled antivirus protection, missing patches, and improperly configured shared folders could create security blind spots across the organization. To address these risks, Organization D adopted AhnLab ESA to assess endpoint security posture through checklists, security scores, and policy-based remediation.

Visibility Through Checklist and Score-Based Management

AhnLab ESA evaluates endpoint security posture using approximately 70 checklist items, covering areas such as antivirus installation, engine updates, patch status, password policies, and screensaver settings. Among these items, key checks are designated as priority requirements to help define the minimum security baseline the organization must maintain.

Each endpoint is assigned a score on a 100-point scale. This allows administrators to identify vulnerable devices more easily, prioritize remediation, and manage endpoint security based on clear quantitative criteria. It also helps users understand the current security status of their devices and recognize what actions are needed.

Enforcing Continuous Maintenance of Core Security Controls

Attackers are increasingly combining legitimate system tools, known malware samples, and known vulnerabilities rather than relying only on newly developed malware. In this environment, basic controls such as active antivirus protection, updated engines, and timely OS and software patching remain essential.

AhnLab ESA helps organizations continuously assess and manage these core security controls. By doing so, Organization D was able to maintain a stronger endpoint security baseline and respond more effectively to risks such as missing patches or disabled antivirus protection.
